Cigarette lighter socket not working

Somewhere here there is a detailed teardown of the part of the dash to get at the cig lighter.
What I did recently was fit one of these directly to the wiring and did away with the standard socket.

I took mine out and fitted a USB charger socket for my iPad (running MemoryMap for 'laning) -
