I had the same problem when I bought mine I checked the fuses all was ok then I removed the lighter unit from the dash and the plug that is solders onto the back of the cig lighter had broken off! A quick solder back on solved the problem hope this helps.

I've hardwired a multi socket one to the battery with an in line fuse holder close to the battery and stuck it to the top of the dash with double sided sticky tape. It seems to have stayed and can then run my PDA, Tom Tom and charge my phone when Laning.

You just have to remember it's always on, so if you leave the car for days it will drain it. It has the male plug on the back and I have a female plug that I just pull off of it when not in use, which lays on the dash. The wire is in conduit, which is quite rigid and stops it flying all over the dash.

This might not be ideal for daily use though as it does not go off with the ignition, but you could just hook into the original wiring for that as you seemed to have found it taped off.

Cheers gents, ordered a cheap generic lighter socket off eBay so hopefully will arrive soon.
I manage to remove the fasia and extract the old socket. Behind it I found this

There's the longer white/black wire I had seen before and now some shorter red/black wires which will be harder to reach. Any idea which ones are for the lighter?

Was there no sign of the multi-plug coming off the end of the lighter socket? Spades at 90° perhaps like that plug in the picture. See, a lot take a spur off the cig lighter wiring to feed accessories. Have you used a probe bulb to see what comes on or goes off with the ignition key>

Hi John

No was nothing on the back of the socket at all sadly! I'll have to get a probe bulb and try it on the pair of wires to see what happens

just use blue bullet connectors to connect the wires to the new socket and try it, if it don't work then simply swap the wires over and it'll work

;)
