If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Back to stuff to buy:
Spare nylock nuts for the ball joints on the end of the track rods. They are the same thread as wheelnuts M12x1.25 if original
When I did mine I wirebrushed the exposed threads on the track rod end joint nuts, then made a thread cleaner ( out of an old wheelnut by filing a couple of grooves along the thread) and screwed that down to the nut.
Still when I undid them, they got about halfway and the taper came undone so the nut will not come undone.
I had to split the nuts to get them off to remove the hub.

Thanks for the advice folks, I'll get the M12 nuts ordered.
Replaced the rod ends recently so shouldn't be too much of a problem but better to have and not need eh?

Don't just ask for M12, you will get coarse thread, ask for M12 x 1,25 fine pitch. They are about 50p each, and you only need 2.
You should change nylock nuts anyway as they are only supposed to work once.
