People read that EGR valves cause power losses and many problems, which they do on diesel engines.

On petrol engines they help stop the exhaust valves burning out, as well as reducing emissions.

It does nothing at full load or idle (most of the time).

Most engine management systems test the egr valve by tickling it at idle, and looking for an rpm change, if it doesn't happen, the EML comes on.

It is possible that your valve is sticking occasionally, so it is worth cleaning out.

If you are chasing an irregular missfire at idle, mine has done it for years, I'm always convinced it is about to stop, but it doesn't. I've changed the plugs & coilpacks, cam sensor, cleaned out all the pipework and it is still exactly the same

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

One question.
What is the red circle in the first photo for? :)

Hi tom

In the red circle in the picture are two screws of egr tube.

These must be removed to release the tube and replace the gasket with a blind gasket (at the other end)

There are two tests for the EGR valve, the first is a simple voltage check to ensure that there are no bad connections and the second is to briefly open it when the engine is decelerating and then checking for a change in the manifold pressure.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

OK, long day and too many beers, and somehow I saw PCV instead of EGR. So I wrote a whole diatribe about positive crankcase ventilation.

I think PCV is all good so long as when the motor ages it doesn't start sucking in a lot oil blowby, making it worse.

Now EGR is evil, it's like eating your own poo. Yes it does lower combustion temperatures reducing NOx, but it still sucks in carbon from the exhaust clogging up the valves and chamber.

Anyone know if the EGR on diesel with a DPF pulls it in after the filter?
