Handbrake......? was created by jonesyba420
we were out laning the other evening to see how our local lanes had fared after all the rain and wind recently, needless to say they are getting quite muddy and rutted in parts (mostly sand lanes so drain quite well and are quite well maintained). one lane in particular was muddier than the others and we got bogged down in a mud hole full of water but didnt fail to proceed (mud tyres saved the day lol), about half way down the lane theres a gate to open so upon stopping i noticed my handbrake was pretty much solid, lever would barely go up! i didnt force it just left well alone thinking itll sort itself out and ill asses it later out of the mud!!!
(just painting a picture so you get an idea of what we were doing previous)
at the end of the evenings laning i tried it again it was no longer solid but has alot more leverage than before ie the handbrake lever goes up ALOT more!
it is just a case of the drums are full of shite and need to be opened and cleaned or is something else going on?

Mine's the same - the drums need a good clean out and fettling, they will probably be full of mud and shite :pinch:

Due to some mud your handbrake could be "blocked" for a while.
Possible happened when you used your handbrake at the gateway, they did get blocked in the "on" position.
Then by proceeding your way your handbrake could stayed "lightly" in contact and doiing so you "used" your brake shoes, mud is acting as sandpaper between your brake drum and brake shoes, mud did get out but the harm is done.
Could be something like this, you will see by opening your brake drum that maybe your brake shoes are worn more quickly then normal.
I know people who did make a system that is mounted on the rear brake drum's, after wading through a mud hole, they push a button and the system (sort of whiper wash thing) is rinsing the drums trough with water. Like that most of the mud is gone, cost only some pounds but very effectively.
Anyway, once back home, after each offroad-trip or pay and play-day's i always take my rear brake drums off and clean them thoroughly. Sometimes i see that the mud did do some damage to my brake shoes but because i'm checking them every time i know about when to change them.
Maybe i should try and install the system.

Dead easy. Remove the rear wheel, and either the drum will ease off, or tap with a hammer (via a piece of wood or rubber mallet) to free it.
There are also two holes on the face of the drum that you can screw in bolts to ease it off as well which will prize it off.
Them spray with lots of brake/clutch cleaner.
