1999 Jimny runs for 10 minutes and then stops was created by squarebore
Hi All,
Any help would be appreciated. I have just bought a 1999 Jimny with 117kkms. It had been garaged and not driven for 18 months. It starts easily and runs very smoothly but on the first drive it stopped after about 15 mins and would not restart. It turned over easy but no start or even a cough. I pushed and pulled leads, air filter etc and then after approx 40min it started and ran for another 10-15 mins. This time it stopped for about 10 mins then started again. ran for another 10 mins and by now I am almost home and stopped again. I rolled into the driveway and left it for 2 hours and then of course it started again easily.
A little more fault finding. Ran for 16 mins this morning then stopped. After 30 mins it started again. ran for 10 mins and stopped. I could hear the fuel pump priming so I guess that was not the problem.
I sprayed some aerostart in the air filter box and it kicked straight away. Does that mean it is not an electric problem?
I then disconnected the plug in the photo below and the engine started. It is the plug with the red triangle on it. I don't know what this does. When I reconnected the engine would not start.
Thanks in advance. Michael

Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions on the website front page.
Sounds like the Camshaft Position Sensor.
When it cuts out pour cold water on the sensor. If it starts again you have found the fault. Its item 7 in the picture below

Hi, the sensor you have indicated in the photo is the map sensor. There is a small vacuum pipe leading to it this connected to a little orange valve/filter. Try cleaning it out with brake cleaner.
One thing to consider either is try running it without the fuel cap on as it may be vacuuming the tank so after a while the pump won't be supplying fuel.
The cam sensor is on the back of the head with a little earth lead on and a multi plug. As martin says try this too by cooling it after it stops.
Good luck

BINGO! you guys are great, Tested this morning and ran for 16 mins and stopped. Tipped a water bottle on the sensor and started immediately. I can see this is quite common and you probably get sick of answering the same question but thanks for taking the time. My Suzuki dealer had no idea and had never heard of this failure. Imagine how hard it was to diagnose this type of thing before internet forums?
I'll do a search on how to change the item but it looks like a simple unbolt and replace.
Thanks again
