This gives me an idea: what if the mileage and car age when the pulley broke would be posted by those who had it happen ? maybe we can pinpoint a life span for this bloody part. I'd prefer changing it in advance rather than breaking it who knows where...

Not sure about the Suzuki ones but I have changed loads on vaxuhalls, mitsubishi's and BMW's and I have seen some go after 1 year and some last over 6 years there dosn't seem to be a life span it's just when it lets go on you but because we have had so many go on shoguns and L200 we check them every service and you can normally start to see cracks in the rubber and melted rubber around the pulley as the outter half starts spinning around the inner part about 1,000 - 5,000 miles befor they let go, as more than one customer has found out when they have refused to let us change them at service only to be recovered in 6 months later lol

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

I'm fairly sure that the bottom pulley on the MGB in my garage is like this, and that has done 190,000 miles since 1978.....
