While I wait for the rest of my parts sale to provide funding I have been looking at the options available for standard gen3 mud tyres and there are essentially 3 and a half. Goodride sl366, Roadcruza ra3200, maxxis trepador and maxxis wormdrive. Of these only the ra3200 is a 96 load rating and therefore the main one I'm interested in. My question is, are the New generation of remould tyres up to par, certainly they cost virtually as much, or do they still have the old catastrophic wear rates and tread failures of ten years ago?

I have remoulds fitted to my Series 2 Land Rover and they have been fine, I would fit them again to this vehicle without hesitation.
At the time they gave me the MT pattern I wanted and the price fitted was considerably cheaper than "new" alternatives. This made sense as my main use was off road and the potential for tyre damage was high. My series 2 also never went much above 50MPH, so not much chance of a blow out. They are still in use, nothing wrong with them.
However my past experience of remoulds (poor student) was always slow leaks and flat tyres, to this end they always ended up with tubes fitted to correct this. My Land Rover has Tubes as standard (pre dates tubeless), so is this masking the old problem?
If they now cost the same as "new", without hesitation I would say fit the new ones and avoid remoulds like the plague. I would also never fit them myself to my daily drive, my preference would be "cheap" none brand new over remoulds simply as I still expect them to require tubes at some point.
Interestingly my local tyre place won't touch them, even if they are not supplying the tyre - they must have their reasons?
They can be acceptable if the circumstances are correct, but you hang heavy trailers on your Jimny and I would feel a little uncomfortable with remoulds on the rear coping with this extra work load. Just my opinion, others may differ.

Kinda my entire thought process in a nutshell. For the most part I'm hopeful that a new mud is going to offer at least the same grip as the Bridgestone ditchfinders. I'd be interested in knowing if the same can be said of the remould options?

My local tyre place will only fit remoulds to steel wheels (and are also reluctant to fit non-remould muds to alloy wheels, they moaned about our BFG KM3)
This is because they reckon they needs lots of balancing which is only possible to steel wheels, the stick-on weights for alloys are not good enough apparently.
We liked the Trepadors we had in the past but I understand they have been discontinued in the smaller sizes need for a Jimny and that any tyres around are old stock (but I may be wrong on that)

My problem with remoulds is that you don't know the construction of the base carcass that is being used.

In the past I have had to explain to tyre shops what and how the red and yellow dots on tyre work for fitting without resorting to masses of weights.
