They allow me to run on the road in 4x2lo which is great for towing and manoeuvring trailers. It is possible to do this electronically on the gen3 as well as mechanically so I suspect that it is a modification in development for the gen4.

Ohh, that dont sound too promising. Even with regular servicing they can still go awry? Damn it. I'll be keeping an eye out for that mod then.

Cheers

On the gen3 there are two failure modes. The solenoid packs that control the vacuum to the hubs can get full of debris and need cleaning if you are lucky or die a miserable death if you are not. And on older cars the vacuum pipes on the axle corrode and leak. They are replaceable but most people will bypass them and either lock the hubs permanently or fit manual ones like I have. Either way not a big deal to sort.

The section on jacking the Jimny up using a trolley jack (e.g. to change a wheel) is a tad ambiguous. Read the words and look at the diagram - can you put the jack under the axle/diff and lift or not? How should you do it - bet your average garage or tyre depot operative won't be following the Manual..

As for the guidance on changing between 2 & 4 WD and LR and HR - downright confusing.

On th gen3 radius and trailing arms there's little nub things cast into the bottom edges about half way along. They act as locating pins to stop the pad of the jack from slipping. I only put stands under the actual axle and as close to the spring seats as I can.

The manual was perhaps trying to say don't shift into 4H while depressing the accelerator. If you release the gas pedal it will reduce the load in the drivetrain making it easier for the transfer case to engage the front axle.

Thats a good point.

My tyre fitter, jacked it up from around the axle, couldnt see exactly where, as i was sneeky peeking them from a distance. Needless to say i was worried.
