So because of the clutch cable saga I decided to inspect, clean and lubricate the original and it has passed muster and I will be refitting it.
I replaced the engine yesterday and it went in sweet. I just happened to have an old gearbox primary shaft that was the exact fit for my car, even to the flywheel bearing diameter, which helped in getting the box and engine to mate so easily. I am halfway through refitting the ancillaries I had to remove when removing the lump. The trick is to remember the sequence so that you don't have to backtrack. When removing it was a case of what next to take off to get the next bit of so there was no set sequence but trying to get that right in reverse is time consuming to say the least. I marked all the bolts, nuts etc which helped though.

So today I finished dressing the engine and went to fit the clutch cable. Now, when I removed it, once I found how to actually disconnect it, I found that the clutch pedal fork does not pull straight out of the bulkhead hole. It has to be wiggled out. Of course you cannot get away with wiggling it in though. It actually hits the pedals structure and has to be angled inboard to clear because of the length of the fork end. You can easily get your hand up to the top of the clutch pedal and the bulkhead hole but you cannot actually see it unless you are tiny and a contortionist! Anyway I got it on the pedal but will continue tomorrow to fit the cable on to the clutch arm and adjusted.

So today I finished the refit and started the engine. It fired almost immediately but it was at high revs so I slipped the throttle cable off the quadrant and left it to warm up. No leaks from either the fuel rail or the water system. I had saved the coolant when I drained the radiator as it was not old having had to replace the lower pulley a few months ago. The system just took what I drained and all was good. To go back to the high revs. On fitting the throttle cable the bracket mounts on the inlet manifold and is used to clamp the main engine loom in place. The bracket has a little locking tab to stop it turning and I had got that on the wrong side of the protrusion on the manifold effectively pressing the throttle. One 10mm bolt removal and refit and all was good.
I hope some of what I found is helpful to the forum members.
