After that incident with the front pulley coming apart, I tighten them just enough to stop the squealing in the dry.

Me too and with some motors they say X" of deflection - I've had the engineer's rule out and spring balances but really it's a right game with some alternators.:angry:

Never mind the cell phone, I wonder if I can use my Snark tuner. Clip it on the belt or something and twang away. First I need to calculate the note needed.

Between finger and thumb for a single V belt....works for me still!

Nothing sounds worse than a timing belt too tight.....at the stealers we had all manner of setting tools for belts....never used em... :D
