After that incident with the front pulley coming apart, I tighten them just enough to stop the squealing in the dry.
If you fancy getting the calculator and ruler out with your 'phone
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Me too and with some motors they say X" of deflection - I've had the engineer's rule out and spring balances but really it's a right game with some alternators.

Never mind the cell phone, I wonder if I can use my Snark tuner. Clip it on the belt or something and twang away. First I need to calculate the note needed.

Nothing sounds worse than a timing belt too tight.....at the stealers we had all manner of setting tools for belts....never used em...
