Are the figures for the tension of the belts in the Jimny manual then?

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

For most belts I use my finger, for the timing belt on the G13/G16 engines I use a cheap spring balance.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

The "modern" way is with an optical gauge.
You point it at the belt and twang the belt, it then measures the frequency the belt vibrates at.
Just like the cricket, this would be brilliant if only the manufacturers told you the frequency to expect (which depends on the mass of the belt, the tension and how far between the pulleys.)
I suppose you send the car to the stealers for adjustment with a thumb  , then immediately take a measurement, write it down and keep adjusting back to that one.
There is an "app" for these new fangled mobile phones that claims to be a tension meter, I think you have to be very quiet and pluck the belt, then it measures the frequency with the microphone.

That sounds (excuse the pun) absolutely brilliant. I learn every day. I expect the garage tool is very costly.
And you are right, getting detailed info on this particular DIY job is a PITA.
My problem is that I don't like to over tighten so I tend to let the belt run too loose.
