Another option is one I pursued around 15 years ago....small claims court.

Monty Python black knight scene comes to mind :D

Ah, think I got the wrong end of the stick - salvage value is apparently around 80% of the market value so if the latter is 2500 then they'd only pay me 400 or so to fix it with.

A third party insurer can't write your car off, only your own insurance can do that. As the third party have admitted liability and the claim is being handled by them your car has to be fixed and to your satisfaction. If however you claim off your insurance then they will write the car off, pay you sweet fa for it and look to reclaim the cost from the third party, do not go down this route.

Wow, that's quite a game-changer! So if in theory the cost of repair (3 new panels, 2 new wheel arches, new entire door with glass and wing mirror) is something like 2000 or even 3000, the third party insurer (taxi firm's insurer) HAS TO cover it regardless since they have accepted liability?

The acceptance of liability has to come from the third party insurer not the policy holder and they are at their liberty to have a loss adjuster examine the car before accepting liability, which is to stop spurious and exaggerated claims, for example to determine which panels would require repair not replacement. In other words while they will fix the car be honest with the quote because if they smell a rat then they are again at liberty to reject full liability meaning you have to claim on your insurance and run the risk of it being a write off. It's a minefield and ultimately insurance companies exist to make profit and nothing else so all and every excuse to avoid paying out will be used. Just be careful and honest and you will be fine.

You're entitled to be returned to the position you enjoyed prior to the ding, which means they repair your vehicle to its previous condition, or provide you with the means to get one of roughly equivalent mileage condition and value. See where it goes and be cool - be prepared to the worst, but hope for the best. Be sensible and firm and your unlikely to have much problem. It's when people value their Trabants in the Bugatti range that problems start.

If you have a loan car stand firm in that too. Provided you don't unreasonably drag your heels you're entitled to keep it until you have a replacement vehicle (if they didn't repair yours), not just until they've given you a cheque.

You can see why a sensible cyclist, like wot I is, stays well out of the door zone, or "death" zone.

Thanks guys for all the advice. Quote for the repairs is 1800 (1000 of it labour!) which I have forwarded to LV for their approval. They have yet to approve it but I am thinking of requesting the rental car before the work actually commences as I will need a car for a few days in a row away from home so wouldn't be able to drop off the jimny if I took that. Think they'll accept that?
