Yorkshire, England, UK. like it says on mi site profile.

So what is being said is that such things are available and are useful but are not legal under type approval.

Oh well back to the plans then.

If its UK then the receiver style hitches used elsewhere in the world are not type approved. you can use them for your own off-road purposes but you cannot tow on road with them.

I'm not sure that is true. We have a factory fitted one on our range rover.

Yes they are available for range rovers but none have been designed/type approved for a Jimny in the EU.
The manufacturer has to type approve for each model.
Probably the OP would be easier either getting a trailer or flange type towbar and/or make up some sort of rack that would bolt /clamp to the existing towbar.
Watling towbars do a clamp adapter for swan neck towballs that allows you to slot in the receiver type hitches BUT you can't use it for towing(on the road) and it costs £75+ vat so, as a flange type towbar for a Jimny can be had for around £100 new, it would be easier to go down that route and you can then bolt on what you like and still tow. (75 kg nose weight though!!!)

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

The difference is that when people talk of a receiver hitch they are thinking of the standard USA style 2" box section receiver for which an infinite selection of accessories is available. There are plugin tow hitches available for a number of UK cars (including my Range Rover) but these do not obey any "standard" as they are specific to type and are approved on type. I notice Tow Trust are bringing out a range of plugin tow bars but these are not to the receiver standard.

Looking at them, receiver hitches plug in along the axis of the pull, the tow trust ones (and my Range Rover one) is at nearly 90 degrees to the axis of the pull. I wonder if this is part of the reason .

Just to clarify, our Rangerover has a USA style 2 inch horizontal jobby rather than the factory clip in thingy. Exactly the same fitment as the Reece hitch I had on a Patrol in Australia. I'll see if I can find a plate on it. It's a 2008 UK car and I'm pretty sure it had it from new.

They are a good system in terms of interchangeability but after 200,000 miles (!) of towing ours has a few shims hammered in to stop it knocking.

Is it an imported bar? Doesnt look like a LandRover one?

www.ntta.co.uk/law/towbars/type_approval.aspx

From another tow bar site

Additionally, US 2" and 2 5/16" towballs are not Type Approved and should not be used in conjunction with Type Approved vehicles. They can however be used with non Type Approved vehicles which include all special import vehicles from Japan and America and UK commercial vehicles including all vans and pick-ups.
