My answer is always consider what the actual gain of a lift really is.

If you manage to fit tyres with 1" larger diameter, you increase the ground clearance by 0.5" i.e. the tyre radius

So standard Jimny tyres are around 28" diameter. A small lift will let you go to 29" tyres without trimming, giving 0.5" increase. Not a lot of gain.

So I usually say to try it on standard size Mud tyres first. This can produce a pretty unbeatable combination.

We went for standard size muds and a 2" lift for cosmetic reasons (i.e looks good). No clearance increase at all but a good looking stance and off-road performance from the tyres.

the guys who have put a lot of effort (and money) into 33" tyres have gained 2" to 2.5" clearance.

thank you all for your responses. so tyres like 235/75/15 or 225/75/15 will put strain on the driving shaft or other parts??

Standard tyres are 26 inches and the biggest you can fit without a lift are just under 28 so you can gain near enough an inch or clearance without a lift or trimming.

235/75 (29 inches) are about the limit for standard gearing in terms of drive-ability, but in terms of breakages the drive-train will cope OK up to about 31s. A lot of it depends on how and where you drive though.

The radius arm mounts on the chassis are such a low point and their position just inside the track of the wheels puts them at the high centre part of the ruts.

True but you only need an inch or so to get them up higher than the axle end. Obviously more lift helps approach, departure and breakover angles too but they are already pretty good on a Jimny.

I'd like to try a virtual lift on a Jimny. I reckon with some cutting and welding I could fit 31s on standard suspension with full articulation and no scrubbing.

Ok so if I add a 2" suspension lift, with some 1.5" wheel spacers and put on the 235/75/15 I should be fine? No mechanical issues or no issues at all ?
