tappet Shims for M13A engine was created by tech_type
Does anyone know where I can buy valve/tappet shims and the associated special removal tool for an M13A (DOHC 16 Valve) Jimny engine? Are there any universal shims that would fit which can be bought?- if so what is the right diameter? Thanks.

I suspect that it's a dealer only for them as no one else would keep them. Suzukis not being that popular.

Are they very tapperty then? I've never heard of anyone re shimming their tappets on a Jimny but that's not to say it's right to leave them.

Well I can get the Suzuki ones but if you are looking for a non-Suzuki part with a non-Suzuki price then I cannot help

And not sure on the removal tool? The workshop manual seems to show someone using their fingers??

There are 4 forked removal tools, that screw over the cam carrier caps, and press the buckets down.
09916-67020 in the manual.

When I get A Round Tuit (you used to buy them on holiday in the 1970s ;) ) I intend to check mine, as at 140,000 miles I'm sure that the gaps have healed up, and that could be why I have that missfire at idle, and it seems a bit out of breath at 50 plus. (Or the catalyst could be getting blocked up)

However, you need an expensive gasket, that doesn't come with the plug hole seals (which are very very likely to leak) to even think about it.

(The simple test is to measure the compression, but my compression gauge won't fit, as the plugholes are down by the sump somewhere  )

I'm sure that I can contrive something to get the shims out if I need to, usually you lever against the camshaft, on the isuzu I think I just pushed them down and got an assistant to flick them out.

If the gaps have healed up then it is just a matter of grinding the bucket side of the shim away to get the clearance back.

"Correct" procedure is to measure all the gaps, then remove the offending shims and replace with wider ones but this supposes that the gaps are too large, normally the problem is they are not there any more as the valve recedes into the seat, so you would need to fit the thinnest shim into all the buckets, and then measure the gap you created to calculate what shims you need.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

You really need a collection of shims so you can get it right without buying and fitting the wrong ones just to measure again and find your first measuring session was wrong.

I hate to say it but this might be the only time I suggest using the dealer. They will have a full range of shims so that even if it gets to trying some for size, they'll have them there to do so with.
