In The Olden Days, I did a fair few cars properly*, the last I remember was an Austin Maxi.

In those days, we had proper leaded petrol, and the gaps used to widen through wear, so I swapped the shims around where possible, ground down the ones that were oversize, and ended up needing to buy only 2 or three that were undersized.

IIRR, the shims were about £2 each from Austin-Rover, and that was in The Olden Days, when £2 would buy a round of drinks

*the isuzu was hard to start, so I just ground the shims to give some clearance and get another 150,000 out of the engine. ;)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

I think the manual says check them every 30K. I haven't actually checked the gaps yet, but It sounds quite tappety with 110K miles on the clock. I am assuming they will need doing, am researching whether it is feasible/cost effective for me to attempt it myself.

I reckon mine has done 140K. it doesn't sound tapetty at all, in fact the lack of noise is what bothers me, as I think the gaps might have closed up through seat wear with this eco-petrol we have to use nowadays

You can check them easy enough for the price of a gasket, they may not even need adjusting.

You sure it is the tappets you can hear, not the usual injector chatter?
