Guess I's better start saving for a rear winch and ground anchor as I haven't got any mates and I work Sundays :(

I'm in the mindset that a rear winch would be better and more useful for me, to drag me off whatever I shouldn't have drove onto in the first place ?

Whereas most peeps have front winches - is this because they look better and the mantra is onward and never retreat

;)

ideal world hal you'd have both like dave has for any situation, its easyer to mount one on the front than the rear think thats a factor aswell.ive got an idea to fit a stealth 3000lb winch to the rear of mine just need a couple quid to do it.

Manual hubs still need servicing. Mine clogged up and failed on a trip out. But it was an easy job to dismantle, clean and regrease.

Based on guidance from various training courses I have done courtesy of Land Rover  rearwards recovery should be the easiest. This is based on the principle that the ground you have just driven over was fine to drive until the very last moment before you got stuck. Therefore you should attempt to recover onto the known good surface.

The surface in front of the car is unknown and caused you to get stuck, therefore forward recovery can drag you into more trouble. So for self recovery a winch on the rear would appear to be best.
