Idle up switch or hand throttle ?

You won't gain any extra charge from increasing the revs with a hand throttle. The alternator is already putting out 14.4v at idle. As you draw more current, it will put more load on the engine and the idle control valve will add air to maintain the revs. Basically, the system you are trying to create is already fitted.

That's assuming your alternator is working as it should. If it isn't, get it fixed!

That's interesting because some systems create an idle up when in use. Now I thought it was precisely for giving more juice while the load is slowing the motor.

Regarding the hand throttle, I use it when the engine (Diesel - Pajero) is cold for a few hundred yards. Some use it so as to "creep" (auto) at a speed that is more desirable. I used mine on my Pinin to overcome a slightly defective idle sensor.

I done mine with a choke cable looped around onto the throttle pedal. It's good for cold mornings as well to keep the idle a little higher while scraping ice.

alternator is working fine, had thought it would increase its output though at higher rpm, but if they engine will automatically take care of that then i have no use for it.

i've also investigated a larger alternator, still on the cards at this stage.

One from the archives, 2003 in fact...

This was on the "Superzuki" Vitara...

A simple drop down bar with a nut welded on the end, then a cut off bolt so that the head was like a little peg that fitted into a hole drilled in the accelerator pedal, then you just wound the bolt in or out until you get the perfect revs for winching or charging the battery some more...

Ive had one made from a pushbike gear lever - obviously not the modern twistgrip things ! just an old racer style gear lever going down to the pedal. Worked a treat
