Well Busta,
You have me sold. I have listened to your advice and that is what I shall buy. Thank you so much for the photo comparism as it sort of put things into perspective, what with running costs etc. No doubt I will be popping over to show you what I have bought when the time comes (Sept) lol. I say Sept because that is the annual aniversay date that I can have a drawdown on a policy.

The one thing that I cannot understand because I am too much of a bumkin is why I see some people have a snorkel-air intake fitted to thier Jimny. On a landie yes, diesel which is a compression ignition system will run underwater as the electrics play no further part apart from the charging etc. Yet the Jimny has a system where the normal car electronics under water would stall anyway, never mind about the engine sucking in water?

Perhaps you could send me a link to that rear diff lock thingy you mentioned. Do that need a compresser to operate it. Anyway thanks for all your help and advice. PS I liked that link to that campsite you had on your profile thingy. Dog friendly as well which is a bloody bonus. Cheers holdsy

The electrics and ignition system of a Jimny are waterproof from factory and will work fine submerged. So a snorkel makes good sense to those using their Jimny in very wet conditions. That's probably 5% of Jimny's with snorkel on this forum ;) Most fit it just for looks... Beyond me why.. :P

I'm glad I could be of assistance!

This is the diff lock I mentioned. It doesn't need any compressors or controllers. It's worth reading up on how lockright lockers operate before you buy one because they are a bit love-hate. Most of that seems to be the result of poor installation, though.

As Tom says, the Jimny is a capable wader, although it can lead to problems down the line with water collecting in the front swivels and damaging kingpin bearings. But most snorkels are fitted for 'the look'. It's beyond me too, Tom!

The Old Vicarage Campsite is my own business, so if you like that sort of thing pop along and we can talk Jimny over a beer or 2!

Busta, Holdsy, only just seen this thread.
I am Norfolk based too.
Got an original 98 Jimny and have recently done 3 inch lift, fitted 215/75's and other bits and pieces.
Having loads of fun laning and just fitting a snorkel as we have had a couple of close calls with fords when out with landys. Also fitting a locker and the winch is already in.
Landy boys took the mickey a bit when we started, but they have a new respect for the little Jimny. Didn't realise there were so many members on here Norfolk based.
PM if you want to meet up, I am getting to know a lot of the Norfolk lanes.

Thanks for dropping me a line via this forum thingy. I will be in the market to get myself a newish Jimny in a few weeks time, that's if my lurcher can jump into the back ok. I would be grateful if you can spare a bit of time just to give me some advice please of what I could buy to make it more usable whilst off road etc.

I was going to get myself a half decent Landie/discovery as I will have about £9000 to budget, and it is just a shame that there were more places selling Jimny's that had body lift kits already fitted etc on the forecourt. I did read some where about a Jimny with frontera wheels, which I suppose are 16 inch rims. I got yapping to a shooting friend of mine last night and happened to mention about these frontera 16 inch hubs, to which he replied he has a set of 5 16 inch alloy frontera rims if I want them. Do you think that they will be too big for the Jimny? I mentioned to him that the larger wheels might impead the steering lock to which he replied that I could fit wheel spacers to overcome that problem. What do you think? I was going to have a lift kit fitted, but when I checked the prices I nearly had a bleeding fit lol.

As for fitting a snorkel I think that I will leave that until I came across one cheap (yeah I know that I'm a tight git) My main concerns are getting the Jimny a tad higher ground clearance by using the 16 inch rims "that's if they will fit. As for these axle diff lockers are they any good? And would they needed to be fitted to both the front and rear axle (kin hell this is all adding up to a lot of bloody beer vouchers lol)

Lastly is there any where in our great county of Norfolk that sell accessories for Jimny's? Cheers Holdsy

Frontera is 6 stud, Jimny is 5 so not an easy fit. Fourtrak wheels are about the only ones that fit straight on. There's no advantage to 16" rims over 15", it's the tyres you put on them that make the difference. The same range of sizes are available for both. Wheel spacers widen the track which completely removes any of the advantages I mentioned earlier that the Jimny has in ruts.

Non-remould 215/75 R15 or re-mould 195/85 R15 tyres on the standard rims will fit with no modifications (apart from removing front mudflaps if you have them) and gain you a useful amount of ground clearance.

Anything bigger will need a suspension or body lift, and possible gearing modifications.

The lockright lockers definitely work. They are only available for the rear axle. Whether they are necessary or not is up to you. I've got on pretty well without one, but I wouldn't hesitate to fit one if I felt I needed more traction.

I don't know of anywhere locally that sells Jimny bits.
