Manual Hubs

Driving on 2wd on highway and normal road's until we arrive to the meeting place for the road book (greenlane trip).
Before we start the road book i lock the hub's and leave them all day on and off we go, driving in 2-wheel drive.
When needed 4wd, stand still, put the little gearshifter into 4-wd, then only the front wheels will be powered trough the dropbox.
Once you passed the obstacle and if you don't need the 4-wd (high or low) anymore you put the little gearshifter back to 2-wd (always standing still), this disengages the frontwheels from the dropbox and the frontwheels run free again.
So you don't have to get out your car and you can leave the hubs "locked"!
After a good day of greenlaning and lots of fun, arrived at the meeting point again, i put the locked manual hubs back again in "free-modus". Simple as that.
I never use 4-wd on normal roads unless there is lots of snow on them and even then i like it more to drive the Jimmy in 2-wd, more fun guaranteed !
Fuel consumption will not be any different on a Jimny because all the system just do the same thing with manual or automatic hubs, could be i have some fuel saving, loosing the weight from all those vacuum pipes i took off....

For me, the vacuum hubs offer a massive convenience and I'd be very reluctant to switch to manual.

Busta wrote: If your automatic hubs work, stick with them and fit a 2lo switch (search for it in the forums). This gives you the best of all worlds- 2wd, 4wd, 2wd lo range all without leaving the seat. If you have extensive problems with the vacuum hubs then manual hubs make sense but if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

couldnt agree more, ive got a 2lo switch. usefull if you need the slow speed of low box without the need for 4wd;)
