I was wondering what is the benefit?
Do people just fit these when the OEM units fail or are they better in some way?

Problems with Vac hubs are common some people swear by them some people loath them me personally would only ever have manual versions as for does it save fuel and wear big topic of discussion
personally its no big deal to lock them up if you are going out to play and just unlock them when you are done better than end up arse deep in mud and water if they do fail

Manual hubs means you have to get out the car to lock them. vacuum / air operated hubs will engage from within the cab, usually when you put the car into four wheel drive.

As for advantages with one or the other; manual ones you have to get out and lock yourself, they don't rely on motors or pumps and therefore are very reliable. the air hubs you don't have to get out the car for, but if they fail you will lose four wheel drive.

I have manual hubs from my old SJ, I did have air ones but I took them orf.

Hi and low 2wd, to go 4 low you would have to get out the car and lock them before hand. If you had done that at beginning of trip then switch in between from car

when i take mine off road i lock them before i set off and unlock them on my return home. all the transfer gears work as normal . 4wd high and low are engaged with the lever. the vac hubs do tend to stick but you will hear when they do, you get a sort of rasping machine gun noise. while your vac hubs are working properly they are ok. if you are planning on using the jimny off road a lot i'd recommend getting manual hubs. you lock em' and 4wd will work. no issues leaving them locked either other than a slight possible increase in fuel consumption.

standard jimny - for now
