If you lock the standard hubs manually by pulling the splined core forward then the issue can be that it will unlock at an inopportune moment unless you jam it locked in some way. I have jammed them in the past by dropping a small nut behind the splined core.
Once this is done then they simply become fully locked hubs and you select 2WD/4WD on the transfer box.
The main disadvantage of this is the wear pattern on the front drive components. If you think about it then the wheel is driving the transmission rather than the transmission driving the wheel. Therefore wear is occuring on the reverse face of all the components, some components may be cut or hardened specifically in the forward direction and may not take kindly to long periods of wear on the reverse side.

I think they are a good option if you can afford them as you can also use them to bypass any damage that off-roading may have done, ie. if you have broken a diff or CV you can set them to "free" to get you home. If the hub is fully locked you would have to remove it in these circumstances.

I nearly bought what appeared to be fixed hubs as I intended to keep the wheels engaged most of the time. I believe this to be a good thing or at least better than always freewheeling cos it gets the diff turning etc. but that's just me. I read a few comments years ago about peeps who never selected engaged.
It is looking like mine are staying in engaged most of the time but if I intended to whip up North and do a few hundred quick miles I would select freewheeling. The choice is there see. One thing for sure, I'd rather have them engaged all the time than let me down when 4x4 is needed.
