No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationWell I went to see it, not keen to be honest. The bodywork was in reasonable condition but the test drive wasn't so good. The clutch bite was no more than a couple of inches off the top and there was a nasty 'brrr' when accelerating in 2nd and 3rd. The steering wasn't too bad considering there were some quite chunky tyres on there. Last of all the brakes felt a little spongey but that may be just because my car's pedals are rather firm. Going to try arrange a test drive of another that i've seen which i like rather a lot though it has a £1750 BIN price...does say its had an engine overhaul though....whatever that means?

The spongey feeling on the brakes ties up with the handbrake position, the rear shoes are worn or badly adjusted.

The nasty "brrr" in 2nd/3rd is the killer. Either the clutch is slipping, a UJ is worn out or the Transfer Box Chain is worn.

Sounds like it needs some work, only buy this one at an appropriate price and be prepared to invest time and money

The blue one. Seat wear is pretty standard on these, they eventually collapse altogether, easily sorted from a scrap yard. £1750 seems a little high to me but then I have not looked at what you can expect to pay at this age of jimny.

Check the boot floor, inside the tool storage "recess", for rust on these earlier ones.

As it is unmodified and looks clean I guess its not been abused so should behave like a road car to drive.

Yeah the hand brake had no ratchet left really and was 'slack' shall we say! I did think the brr was going to be expensive like. Needless to say this one is out of the running, there are bids over the reserve already and i'm happy to let it be somebody elses problem. The guy told me the PO before him has 5 jimnys he off roads so its had substantial abuse as I can feel.

Well Parkers reckon at 2000 age with 100k on i should be paying 1660 trade for a good one. I'm looking at 1500 top whack for a mint condition road only Jim. Where is this recess you speak of? Is it a case of pulling the carpet up on the boot floor? Really appreciate your help and between us i should get a good one. Glad I did go and test drive that banger as it gave me a feel of what i should be looking for and what faults feel like.

The recess is in the boot floor, just inside the rear door. Its where the jack and tools are stored. Earlier models are apparantly not galvanised (my 2003 is) and there are reports of rust in this area.

To engage 4 Wheel drive, either from a stand still or whilst driving (the manual says up to 60 mph) pull the small gear selector to the rear until it will not go any further. Do this with either the clutch dipped or with the vehicle coasting (ie no power being applied).

Dont worry if its stiff, as long as it locks into position.
If the Light flashes, then 4x4 has not been engaged, and this is a fault warning.(you can try a few times if you see this happening as it may be a "glitch" (we have this when there is a buildup of mud on the selector or weve been in very deep water.. but it may also be from lack of use)

The 4x4 light on the dash should illuminate. You are now in 4 High. You can run in this mode fine on the road, but avoid high speed and sharp turns and turning the wheels on full lock (you can wind up the transmission!)

To select Low ratio, STOP the vehicle, with the vehicle in 4 High, press the small gearstick down and then it will pull further to the rear. This will engage Low ratio. Dont worry about a whine when you drive as it is likely these gears have not seen that much use. STOP and disengage when you are finished.

When you change into 4x4, you should hear a "ping" noise from each of the front Hubs as they lock, and when you disengage 4x4, they should "ping" again to disengage after a few seconds.
Try this a few times .. if there is no sound, you may have a sticking Hub, or a break / leak in the vacuum system
