I've trimmed the front arches a bit more and can now lift a wheel 41" before any of the others pick up! That's more than it really needs to be honest. On the plus side, it is perfectly balanced with equal articulation and roll stiffness front to rear.

how does it compare off road to your twist in the middle special?

It's hugely better!

Although at first glance the twist in the middle seems a good idea, it has a number of shortcomings.

If you are climbing a slope diagonally, it's only the down-force on your down hill rear wheel that is pushing the diagonally opposite front wheel (up hill front) on to the ground. This means the front of the vehicle has nothing holding it down and tends to roll over on the shallowest of slopes!

The thing I learned from it is that balance is more important than out and out articulation!

The current incarnation is perfectly balanced in that the front and rear have the same amount of articulation and roll resistance. This means the body sits half way between the angles of the two axles. This makes diagonal hill climbs better than standard and improves overall stability.

Driving over the same terrain as I tested the previous one, it seemed to be able to find traction where the other could not. The only exception is gully crossings / axle twisters where the twist in the middle was exceptional despite not having diff locks.

The new one has front & rear lockers - so they can overcome the more limited articulation.

The only place the new one struggled where the old one did not was climbing over a fallen tree. It was probably 60cm diameter - and I had to use the lockers and a bit of right foot!

Overall I'm very pleased with it's capabilities. Just need to enter some Challenges now to see how it (and me) do under pressure!
