Was thinking of getting an 18v battery impact driver, someone mentioned snapon do them, the spec does look impressive but £500 is a bit steep. Can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative, are the de walt ones decent?

Snap On all the way . I know they are expensive but i have used them for years and don't think they can be bettered

I was looking at these, they are all pretty feeble until you spend serious money.

The best VFM I could find is the Draper 31075, a 300Nm (Nm are tiny) = 200 lbft 24V NiCd unit, retails around £120 inc VAT. I doubt if it would last very long if you seriously used it.

Most of the review sites rave about Milwaukee, they do an 18V heavy duty brushless 1/2" drive unit with 400 lbft for about £400, which looks more like it ;)

The cheap screwfix ones are 88 lbft, and 1/4 hexagon drive, I'm sure I can get more than that with a ringspanner :)

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

At home and at work I use a Makita BTW251. 230 Nm and perfect for the Jimny with it's relative small size. I think they've made a new model, same size but 280 Nm.

I've never liked De-walt, find it generally too bukly.

Milwaukee is also great. Similar size to Makita and good batteries.

And yes.. Snap-on is great stuff. But for home garage use it's just overkill.. Way too expensive just being used once or twice a month. My Makita is now 5 years old and still works like it was new.
