Been very nice weather here lately and as I have other cars I havent been speeding to do this job.
So got the box out on Friday, finally, after struggling with two bolts some stupid norwegian apparently had over tightened last year.
Got the case up on the table and it got it fairly easily opened.
Got the three shaft parts out and checked the recieved bearings for fitment.
Four of them in the kit with closed sides on them. only twoor three that I got out had that. This box is a 2010 or 2012.
all bearings in the kit was the right size and of a well known brand like NSK/Koyo.
So last night I was down in the workshop at work on the calm sunday to borrow the press.
all worn bearings went out, and the new ones went in easily. Only hassle was finding small enough tools for my tiny gearbox in the large shop.
All five ball bearings had noticable play in them. But nothing alarming. Glad I cought it early enough so I could save the box.
nothing else in there had any issues as far as I could see.
got the box almost back together last night, no problems except the three fiddly synchro ring bits.
But had to stop when I saw a snap ring left in the parts magnetic bowl.
I can remember taking it off as it was a bit fiddly, but not where it was in/on the box..
it is an approx 20mm snap ring seeger type with the eyes, not the circlip C-type that was on the gear shafts.
Been looking at my pictures, reading manuals, watching videos of dismantling R72's on youtube..
But I cannot find where it should be and I am going slightly mad over this
Edit: Maybe the input shaft, there is a groove there amd the other grooves all have rings allready. Cant wait to get home to see if it fits now.

Found another groove and then I rembered that was where to put the snap ring. Got the box all together nicely, and the box up under the car. Tightening bolts and Brackets, exhaust and driveshafts tomorrow. Then the other wheel bearing I left off earlier, while the car is off the ground.

I love your motivation, I am currently 2 weeks into cleaning a throttle body that I'm not entirely sure I'm even going to use and it's still not finished!

The car was on stands for more than a week before the box was out so it is not excactly fast this..
But I try to not do too much and loose the motivation. and if the weather is nice there is other things to do too.
Been doing rust prevention on the VW T5 too these last few days. Yesterday I sprayed what I thought was stone chip on the sills but I took the wrong spray (no reading glasses!) so will have to wipe the soft underseal off and try again
When I was younger I could keep at it until one o'clock in the night in the garage. not now when I'm older.

In my defence my work day does begin at 04.30 so by home time 12 plus hours later I don't usually have much left to give.

these are the bearings i removed from my 2010 or so gearbox. Only the two bearings where sealed.
Most of them had play in them, but nothing alarming.
Glad I had the more silent tires allowing me to hear the noise early.
Now only the one with the large inner ring and small balls are open.
Generally I think they all look a bit tiny. the bearings in the SJ box are bigger.
Less prone to crash/crunch failure i guess but more mass will make them less tolarable to higher rpm too.
haven't done any calculations on them wich would be "fun" as I got this SKF tool now at work so i can calculate bearing life.
But more interesting to see if I could put a bigger stronger box in there instead.
Maybe a Vitara 2.0 box with integrated transfer case and keep the other tranfser case as a doubler?
But I should have at least another 90000km now with the new bearings so should be OK for many years.
And there is a "new" car in my future too.
My work hours are strictly 7.5 hours and the overshoot gets into an time bank I have to take out in paid time off. Or transfere to +50% paid overtime.
Wich is how I get to do all my trips. Now at 60 hours plus, so a new week long trip is coming soon.
My norwegian farmer friends do not have this good conditions of course.
