As Martin says are you sure it's not belt slip? You'll know cos it's accompanied by smell of burning rubber!
Mine slips when I tried to charge two batteries (see separate thread "Twin batteries", never did get a solution) so I don't do that anymore. Mine also started slipping when I was running with lights, wipers and heater fan on in the snow, stupidly I didn't tighten it and it broke on one of the coldest nights of the year!! It's amazing how quickly it boiled even at -14C. The new belt also slips though now not so bad as I've tightened it well up. I wondered if the alternator pulley might need changing?
John.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

Actually, you might not smell anything.
The best way to tell is to put a spanner, or small socket on the nut in the middle of the alternator pulley and try turning it clockwise (you don't want to undo the nut). If the alternator will turn round and there is slip between the pulley and belt, the belt is loose.
You should be able to turn the engine over in neutral by turning the alternator.
See my tale of woe about adjusting it though
