jimnybits rear disc conversion questions

If you used s/hand discs then the new pads that match the "alien" calipers will need to bed in. If you started with new discs, did you clean any preservative off the contact faces on the discs.
I am not au fait with the design of the Jimny rear hub so I would like to know why the fitting of a disc conversion reduces the time to change a half shaft seal?
Cheers.

on drums, you need to remove the drum, remove the shoes and related components, disconnect the brake pipe ( drivers side 2 pipes) from the brake cylinders ( hoping the brake unions are not rounded off or stuck)

on rebuilding , resemble then you have to pun back a spring that could take 2 min or 45 minutes, and a large swear box, and then you have to rebleed the rear

this happens pretty much every time the wheel bearing goes, as the axle oil contaminates the shoes

with discs, remove and hang caliper, undo 4 bolts and the shaft is out

Cheers Lesmondo.

Sounds very much like the system as used on my SJ413. A friend with a similar model converted his to rear disc - he made his own brackets - had a problem. During normal driving the motion of the car during cornering forced the pads away from the disc and the next use of the brakes was partially used to push the pads back before braking started! This was somewhat unnerving so he needed to apply the brakes before a bend to take up the slack. Has anyone experience similar problems with the Jimny conversion?
On my SJ a fitted a grease nipple that could inject grease between the bearing and the bearing. The bearing were 1RS style.

Personally I prefer discs to work on and maintain. Drums are always fiddly and when they get old tend to under perform. On an off roader they also fill up with water, sand, mud and grit. And just become a pain. Hence why many people convert older Defenders to disc rear brakes by means of fitting a Discovery 1 axle.

Lots of reasons to upgrade to discs then, didn't realise all that.
Never thought about performance after being submerged in water either!

@martin you need to put a kit together in the shop. Rear disk brake upgrade looks an obvious upgrade.
