That "thing" hanging off the air intake is an empty - took mine off to investigate it - box that is probably there to reduce/eliminate resonance in the air intake system. It's all part of the NVH system.

I believe the trapezoid box on the air intake is some sort of de tuner to stop resonance

If it's a square ish box on the intake filter housing with nothing inside its the resonator box box as Martin said, designed to reduce the intake noise.
Well that's what it does on our MR2. Very slight power increase if removed, again MR2, don't know if it will make any difference on the Jimny engine, but it may sound [strike]faster[/strike] louder :laugh:

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

I was told it was to stop it sounding like a Vauxhall Corsa
