Yesterday I tested the low range for the first time on a sandy newly scraped dirt road....

I did not pull the transfer lever all the way back into 4L where it needs to be to fully engage.

I took off REALLY slowly, and the lever jumped out into 4H.

What could this have buggered up?

I tested it afterwards a couple of times and everything was fine.....

When people try low range for the first time, it's normal to be surprised as to how slowly things happen. We still have this notion that you do this and that happens but suddenly you feel that you need to change to second gear that much sooner.
If there are no horrible sounds or vibrations then the chances are you didn't cause any damage. It's normal for the change lever to be a little stiff when new just as the main gear lever will loosen up as the mileage grows.

Jumping out of gear while not ideal is a lot less abusive than doing any kind of manoeuvres on a high grip surface it either 4x4 range. Jimny is not to be abused but equally is quite tough, so I wouldn't get too worried especially if everything is currently working properly.

Lambert, glad to hear that!

I tend to be a bit paranoid about stuff I have not yet taken apart...

Mine jumped out of 4L today.

Driving from muddy grass onto a track.

It did give me a bit of a surprise!

lt the transmission works fine afterwards then it's nothing to worry about.
lf you did it every day, the transmission would likely be damaged, a bit like me accidentally trying to select reverse before my Land Rover had stopped moving forward.
The noise wasn't something you'd want to hear too often, but it was fine afterwards
