I suspect if you trash an alloy you would also have a bent steel wheel as well, which you are probably going to replace rather than hammer it straight. So it boils down to your need to fix a wheel "in the bush" rather than fitting the spare and driving to Quickfit.
That said new steels are a lot cheaper than new alloys, so if you do make a habit of bending them they are the cheaper option. They can also look cool with bigger off road tyres.
But you have no need to put steels on just to hit the off-road tracks, they are perfectly acceptable for this.
Just my opinion, may differ from others etc.

Yeah I wasn't thinking they were necessary just which is better in general for the job at hand, that's a good point about replacing them, steel is much cheaper.

I mean what's the profile on the Volvo C70's tyres? It's at least 70 on a Jimny, which is miles more than the Volvo no doubt and therefore potholes are not going to damage them.
Off road they're fine. The speeds involved in greenlaning are far too low to damage a wheel and at an off road site you'd still be some sort of crazy driver to do damage to a wheel, other than cosmetic.
So don't worry about it!
