Definitely M13A apparently at some stage in 2000 it changed. Not sure of the build date. I found out when I needed to replace the rocker cover gasket.

Maybe I should simply answer "no".

Physically fitting the transmission should be possible. The mounts are likely different. You would want to confirm that the early Jimny M13 and the later VVT used the same flywheel. Interfaces for the transmission control modules and yours are a bit different and that would need to be worked out. All of the issues should be able to be overcome but at a cost. Probably best to keep looking for a decent condition A174.

Was the rebuild out of the question?

Looking at the rebuild option. It's not cheap. Jimnys are not very common in Australia so finding a used A174 transmission is hard to come across as well.
It's a good way to learn about the car and we figure if the transmission is re-built we'll get some good years out of the rest.

My other cars are Land Rovers so quite used to being a mechanic!

I think others on the forum will relate to that comment.

If you are in Australia, and decide on a shop's help, you may want to become a part of the Auszookers forum at:

Members could probably provide some suggestions on where to take it.

If you are going to take a crack at it yourself, you could go with the kit you mentioned and could probably get any other parts from Martin (mlines).

I'm glad the transmission problem hasn't discouraged you. Good luck.
