Thats a bit of a result with the ratios then, possibly some slightly larger tyres would make it perfect.

Could Rockwatt do something about the speedo ring to correct that?

Hmmm, not so easy on a normal Jimny transfer box... That's the speedo ring gear on the top shaft in the photo, so it means splitting the box to get to it -

(This from the other gearing thread)

thats a pain. what about fitting another speedo ring onto the driveshaft flange, like it is on a rocklobster box and using a suitable sensor to match?

Still a lot of messing about for not much of a problem!

Pig of a job today! :(

All the bolts were mega-rusty, seized, some rounded...

... but, eventually. got the front diff out and the new (old) one in... and the two VVT diffs left by carrier to go back to James J999PRE as exchanges for the pre-VVT ones now fitted...

Cleaned everything up -

Just need to rub my balls with some emery paper! ;)

And then rebuild everything on Sunday... I was just going to put everything back how it was, but it was such a pig of a job, I've ordered new kingpin bearings and axle oil seals, to go with the ball seals I had in stock, some thin shims on the kingpins, some new grease in the CVs / knuckles, and new bolts everywhere... so at least I know it's good for another 20,000 miles or so... especially as this one won't be venturing offroad...?

My two handy tools for the job -

On the left half of a pair of plumbers over-centre pliers which are perfect for levering out oil seals, and on the right my kingpin bearing removal tool... it's a suitably sized socket on a small extension bar, the perfect size for tapping out the bearings from the axle's knuckle B)

One side done this morning...

New kingpin bearings, copper shims, new bolts, new oil seal, new ball seal, new bolts, new caliper bolts...

Just having a bacon butty for brunch and then back to the garage to tackle the other side...
