3rd/4th gear noise? was created by Riccy
Having recently spent a small fortune sorting out the kingpins/wheel bearings and adding in a 2" lift and soundproofing, the little jimny has started on a new problem...

when in 3rd or 4th gear it makes a sort of rattly bearing whine under acceleration or engine braking. Its totally silent in 5th and its hard to hear much in 1st or 2nd. If i dip the clutch when its making the noise it stops.
I cant really tell what its doing if i put it in 4x4 high as dont have anywhere to get up to speed off road, and in 4x4 low it always makes a horrible noise anyway.

Its done about 40k miles from new and is an 07 plate. The clutch isnt great and i was wondering if it could be the release bearing making the noise?

Any thought would be appreciated,

Thanks
Ric

Most likely it is a bearing in the gearbox. The VVTs are well known for it.
You can buy the "rebuild kit" with all the bearings for about £120, or strip it down and just source the noisy one.

You would pay about the same for a second hand gearbox, and that will likely whine too.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationTry nearer £700 for a s/hand R72 box. The breakers are well aware the box is in demand.

However having said this there is one for sale that is extremely cheap but it's for spares/repair with bearing problems!!

OK, thanks for the info. will see about blagging a mate to rebuild it, is beyond my abilities i think.

will it just collapse one day and then game over if i keep driving it? dont want to crash or damage other parts if thats a risk?

Yes, has happened to several members, including Martin.

Might trash the gears, might not.

Best to get it done rather than worry about it.
