Belt whistling

Not on mine s the P/S Belt is in front of the Fan Belt, so you have to undo the P/S Belt Tensioner, get the P/S Belt Off ...
When mine failed on a recent off-road trip, we took radiator out, replaced both belts and reassembled in around 45mins.
Sorry, I kind of assumed you would take the PS belt off first- that does come off easy

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

With regards to the alternator belt, is it supposed to be the larger of the two? Motor factors gave me Gates 4PK948 but it is considerably bigger than the one currently on the alternator. The PS belt I have is 4PK833 and this seems a tiny bit smaller than the old one which I guess is expected as it hasn't stretched. So do I have the wrong alternator belt?
I think I am looking entirely at the wrong thing, but the only tensioner I have is the one I removed from behind the fan.
Your tensioner is from the twin cam engine. That bearing is for the single cam type.
It is possible to change the bearing on the twin cam type, but I doubt if yours is gone. They do rattle side to side with your fingers as they are single row race. The bearing you want is larger and much more expensive.
The fan belt is 4pk830 or 4pk835/4pk836. The 4pk830 will go on, but you will have to turn the crank and work it on.
The PS belt is 4pk 850.
Stick a 10mm hex key in the hole in the tensioner, tension the belt by turning the key, and lock the two bolts, the one in the quadrant first, and then the pivot bolt.

Thanks a lot. I assume I tighten the tensioner once both belts are on, how do I know it's tight/loose enough? And do I have to return the alternator roughly to it's former position once the new belt is on?facade wrote:

Just so I get my terminology right, the PS belt is the one on the RIGHT as you look at the engine from the front, and the fan/alternator belt is the one on the LEFT, yes?
So are BOTH my belts wrong? I was going to put on 4PK833 on the right side and 4PK948 on the left.
I'll return both and just get the belts off eurocarparts - they are continental ones but I have no idea which ones from this list to get! www.eurocarparts.com/car-drive-belt number plate:CK04RVT

Sometimes the tensioners can make strange whooshing and whistling noises as the bearings dry out, so replacing the bearing might fix your problem. But the tensioner is easy to get to when everything is back together so might be worth re-fitting your one and only replacing it if the problem persists. The bearing is an industry standard size and will be available from your local bearing retailer, so it's not hard to get hold of.
