Fantastic, thank you very much. I'll do what you've suggested tomorrow.

The last part I need to get my head round is connecting the switch to the ignition controlled live. How do I go about doing that? And what is the rationale begin it?

Thanks once aga Wombat, I really appreciate it.

The switch needs to send voltage to the relay in order to activate the relay to send power to the light. Think of the relay as a heavy duty switch that is operated by the lighter duty interior switch. I suggested ignition controlled live to prevent the light being turned on without the engine running and flattening the battery.
Using a circuit tester check for a wire under the dash or better still near the ignition switch that only becomes live with the ignition on and remains live with the engine running .( avoid yellow wires as these could be to the airbag !! )
If you need more help keep asking :) :)

Thanks a lot for putting up with my ignorance Wombat!

Ok so of the two wires to the switch one goes to the relay and the other has to go to a power source? You'd recommend a ignition controlled live but theoretically could that just come straight from the battery? Have I got that right?

Yes, it could come direct from the battery but put a fuse in the wire as close to the battery as possible :)

Here's how I did mine. I have an illuminated rocker switch as part of a kit I got off eBay.
Installed the switch in the blank switch next to the 2 fog light switches.
Tapped in to the red wire/ yellow wire with silver banding from the front fog light switch. This goes live with side and main lights.
And ran the the other end to the power in point on the switch.
Installed the relay etc under the drivers footwell then ran the wires to the battery and light bar through the firewall where the bonnet release cable passes through it. Pulled the original grommet back and installed another grommet. Can always go back to standard if I sell the car.
Ran the cable and cable tieded it to the wiring harness that runs along the back of the engine bay then down the left side following the wiring to the headlight and front fogs.
I've mounted my light in the mouth of the bumper but I'm fitting another one on top of the bumper via some Jimny brackets I got off eBay
I can run both bars off the same circuit as the total amps drawn by the bars is 25.5 amps and it's got a 40 amp relay with a 30 amp fuse

If in doubt ...... Flat out ??

Are they the brackets that clamp to the front panel behind the bonnet ?. Been looking at them myself, if so are they ok ?
:) :)
