annoying noise, prolly something lose.. was created by Decklandpt
looking for a little guidance here.
given english is not my native language, i hope i can come tru clear enough...
so, i got my second jimny 3 months ago or so. took it the mechanic for a seeing to.
aside from fluids, i changed the cluch kit, cluch cable, front brake pads and changed spark plugs and cables, and a sensor. the bolt on the chassis end of the rear right arm was kinda loose, got tighten up.. apart i have a u joint on the rear prop shaft that needs replacing..
after that i took the car to the country for a drive..nothing serious, just a long strech of dirt road...
on the way back, i head a big clank. it was just like the sound a rock makes when it comes of the tyre...but now i have some at tyres, it was much louder than when i had MT's on, wich grab much bigger stones. in fact the sound was so loud that i can only imagine it was a bolt and not a stone, since the at's onle tend to get small stones stuck in them, like, 5mm or so...
after that a annoying noise started to rear its ugly head.
first time i noticed it was i was stuck on a traffic jam, rolling very slowly, and the noise was half squeek, half crek, like i some rusty leafsprings were flexing with rust on them, or a coilspring on top of a plastic bushing sliping about...but it was definitly metalic. if made that noise everytime i went over a depression or bump.but only slowly, like 10 mph. above that, nothing.
the noise has been getting worse, now it sounds as if a metal plate ocasionaly touches or rests against a sping axle, like the prop or the hub.
i cant figure out where it's coming from, sometimes sounds like it's one of the left side wheels, other like it's from underneath the car.
on a flat surface i can barely hear it, and if i do at all, it's a low wizzing sounds sound, ...
but when i go over bad tarmac it there, constantlly ratling. i considered a shot wheelbearing, but that wouldnt behave like that over the bumps...
at one time,on the first braking of the day afer setting of, the sound persisted after i took my foot of the brakes, as if the caliper had siezed, but never happend again. i'm preety sure it's not the brakes, they make no wierd noises, and my mileage hasnt changed...
i'm considering the guard plates behind the brake discs, or some heat shield.
at times id while driving slowly and i turn the wheel and hold it there, turning, the noise becomes constant, but not every time. at other times, while driving straigh it's there,ciclyc...
had a peek under the car, didn't notice nothing out of the ordinary ..
what could be scaping against what? maybe the cat's heat shield?
i did notice that if i stand behind the car with the engine running i notice a very low metalic noise, half click half squeek, in tune with the exaust's vibration...could it be a joint in the pipes?
it's driving me nuts.
any ideas?

Apologies for not replying sooner.
Take the pads out of the front brakes to see if you have a stone stuck somewhere in the front brakes.
If you find nothing take the rear drums off to see if you have a stone stuck in the rim of the drum on one side.
I had a couple of stones in the rim of one drum recently after greenlaning that caused all sorts of noises.

no problem at all, i know it's a bit vague and could be anything really, but thank you for the suggestion
i had a look in the wheels and i didn't notice anything out of the ordinary..didn´t take them out though.
if it was a stone in the pads it would make a sound every time i used the brakes and it doesn´t
i noticed the sound is always there, no matter the speed, but the sound doesn't change the faster i go...the only time it becomes more frequent is on rough tarmac or something that makes the car vibrate. plus i'm pretty sure it's not coming from the wheels...
i'm almost sure it has something to do with the cat's heat shield or maybe something gone wrong in the exhaust line...
i considered something inside the drums since they haven't gotten any attention yet and i'm pretty sure my rear brakes are almost non existent...
the wife's gonna be away in bussiness by the end of the month, i'll take the chance to leave it at the mechanic's since i can use her car to get around while mine is in the shop.
thanks anyway kirkynut.
i'll report back as soon as i find out what it is

speaking of the cat's...this just ocurred to me...
could it be that the cat's insides are shot and rattling about?
i know the car got a new cat near the headers (i think that's the name, the cat closest to the engine), but it has a second one further down the exhaust line...
the new cat also included a lambda sensor that was also replaced.
the reason this came to mind is because i have a wierd idle...
when i start the engine, it goes up to 1200rpm, then comes down to 1000rpm and stays there for a couple of minutes before finally settling at 700-ish. this would be normal if it was a cold day, but it does that every single time, even in a hot summer day.
then, after driving it for a while if i come to a stop, say, at the lights for example, it stays at 800-ish but after like 10 seconds it drops to around 500 and then it stays around that, fluttering every so often between 500 and 600-ish...
it does this every single time.
i dont know if it has anything to do with the fact that it has a smaller battery than it should (i think it's the correct spec for the 660cc japanese engined version), or if it's due to a collapsed cat. but if it was the cat, it would prolly be ocasional, right?
other than that i dont notice anything wrong with it...no wierd smell from the exhaust, no power losses, the mpg are always the same....

Hi, this is a long shot but...
I tried to find the cause of a mystery noise for weeks - a lot of squeaking on rough roads mainly. I tried brakes, suspension, exhaust etc. It was the bonnet hinges and took 2 minutes to fix. Try tightening the two rubber bonnet stops a the front - turn them anti-clockwise a bit to raise them up higher. Put a spot of oil on the hinges too.

Many years ago, when cars had metal hub caps, we used to remove one, add a couple of nuts, and refit it.
