Would you believe it but the exact same thing has happened to my daughters car today. Luckily she was on the way to see me and steam appeared about a mile from my door. She thought it was an electrical fire because of the "smoke" and as she had her dogs in the car she semi-panicked and got them out as soon as. It appears the red battery light came on too but not being mechanically bent(sic) did not put two and two together. The overheat caused the overfill bottle to blow up out of its mounting but no other damage. A bit of the belt wrapped itself around the steering pump pulley but no damage there. I have took the radiator and fan cowl out as my hands and joints are too big /old to get in the tight spaces with the rad in. Loosening the lower hose off the rad was a struggle as it was! Anyway it is easy to damage the core if working too close to it and then that makes a £18 belt change(both belts) into a lot more expensive repair. Hopefully I will complete the job tomorrow. In a way she was lucky as tomorrow she has to go to a job interview with a return journey of 60 miles so just glad it happened today!
