thanks everyone.
I need to strike a compromise between fouling the reg plate, and getting enough height to properly support the twin axle trailer.
Am I right in assuming the mounts for all Jimnys are the same, i.e. they never changed that part of the platform?
Paul.

Yes you are correct re the fitting so no problem with different years.
I shouldn't worry too much as the ball Just covers the bottom of the plate and most towbars are constructed in such a way to be of a standard EU height these days.(350-420mm to centre of ball)
I actually put a square number plate and light on the spare wheel for some time but have now gone back to the standard position plate .
Look at this link to get an idea of height
www.towbarsandtowing.co.uk/gallery.asp?cat=104
And this is my square number plate mod
As previously said a detachable ball would solve the number plate problem.

thanks for that,
I may be able to get our reg plate spaced a little as its L** *** format, so 1 digit shorter, which would solve the issue hopefully. I did Toy with putting the Reg plate in the Land rover discovery position, and that might happen if it remains an issue, or looks blatantly wrong.
hoping the Jimny is towards the top of the 420mm height threshold, as the trailer is fairly tall. can see me having to Lift the Jimny or fit smaller wheels to the trailer! we'll see when its first tested out. oddly I've seen some massive height variations in tow hitches, from extreme lows like the Xsara Picasso (nose dive specialist), to high stuff like the transit connect we have now.
