Bit more diagnostics this evening. Went to drive the car, wouldn't move freely, just an inch before getting snagged on something again. Jacked up front wheels, both moving freely. With the car idling, no handbrake and out of gear, in 2wd, I jacked up rear and drivers side cleared the floor first and unwound a little. Then as the passenger side cleared the floor it also started unwinding, but didn't stop! There was power going to the rear wheels with idle revs and out of gear. Only enough to turn the passenger side wheel at about one revolution every 8 seconds or so.

Anyways, dropped the car back onto the ground and it then drove with no problems at all, the clunking obstacle seemed to have disappeared!

Any ideas anyone? I'm really scratching my head here!

Cheers

Sounds like transmission wind up to me. Have you driven it on tarmac in 4x4 mode? If jacking up the J has cured it then maybe all the tension built up in the TB gearing has been freed up.

Does sound like it, but religiously avoid 4wd unless already losing traction (I.e off road).

I'm taking it to Brighton Friday to have the rock lobster fitted so fingers crossed whatever the problem is is solved by that!

But what could explain the wheels driving when the car is out of gear? That's the bit that's foxing me now...

So for that to happen, the clutch would have to be dragging a bit, and for the gearbox to be still in gear. Now if the clutch is dragging it would mean it would be hard to get into gear with the clutch peddle down. Is this the case normally?

But that still does not explain if you are in neutral why you are still getting drive to the rear wheels.

Lots of cars will turn a wheel of its of the floor in neutral with engine running.

If you haven't got your foot on the clutch then power is being transferred into the gearbox to the idler shaft, that is spinning and add it's not got much resistance as the wheels are off ground it takes the path of least resistance and spins the transmission to the wheels. The wheel that didn't turn maybe the one that is binding?
