Likely to solve clutch slip by adjusting it or bite the bullet for a new clutch?

My clutch has started slipping in 3rd and 4th gear as well as juddering when I pull away in 1st sometimes.
The bite point is super high but I always thought this was down to being badly adjusted.

Has anyone properly solved either issue with adjustment or am I likely to just need a new clutch?

Try adjusting it first, as the plate wears the release bearing moves outwards, so if the cable isn't made longer the bite point goes higher until it never fully engages.

However, if it is slipping in gear, then either the adjustment is way way out, or it is worn out.

You can adjust it without taking the gearbox off, so start there ;)

The adjuster is a plastic nut on the outside of the clutch cable at the bell housing end. It will be seized, but the cable unhooks and pulls out, loops over the slam panel and you can wirebrush it and lubricate it to free it up.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Thanks mate, v helpful reply! I'm kinda leaning towards a new clutch as if I'm paying the garage labour anyway and it may not work than perhaps I should just bite the bullet?!

Is a new cable at the same time a good idea?

mine often does that, thought it was just me joints seizing up and my steel boots sticking on the pedal

will be interested to hear whether after fitting your new clutch if the pull-away judder goes

or maybe I could have a sticky cable - but guessing that would show up in all gears ?

may as well change your cable at the same time as won't add much to the job cost/time

keep us posted

;)

It doesn't always judder- usually the first time I use it in the day. I've had the car two years and despite thinking the clutch was on its last legs when I got it I reckon it's done pretty well!
Been quoted £280 fitted for an exedy clutch which seems reasonable, I'm taking the print out of the pedal height spec so he can set it up spot on. Dropping it in wed and pick up fri so will report back on how it is!

Well...... Just picked the car up after having the clutch fitted. Seems to be ok, no slipping or judder on pulling away.

The bite point is now v low, was right at the top before. The top 3-4 inches of pedal travel now has virtually no resistance, it's only the bottom of the travel that feels like it's doing the work, Is that normal?
Only thing I've found is that when changing gear and lifting back off the clutch pedal the pedal now has the habit of banging as I let it up too quickly due to the lack of resistance at the top end of its travel.

He was able to free off the clutch cable by the bell housing and adjust the cable- truth be told though I'm confused about that this actually adjusts.... Pedal height or just the bite point?
