battery is new and so is the starter. i'll make sure the connections are good. thanksYellostreak wrote: the small wire is only a trigger so fixing this (even though it may be needed) will not make the starter turn faster.. that's down to a good battery, good starter and good connections on both the earth and the big positive feed from the battery...
what you might be finding (I had this on my RS2000 escort) is that the engine/chassis earth is so weak that it uses the thin one from the solenoid which is not up to the job!...
I'd tell you to simulate first a good earth then second a good supply using a jump lead but this is a little dodgy so be careful if you do.. (arc welding time!)
whatever this is its heavy duty and/or expensive!

So I wonder if after years of degradation the wiring in the car is not good enough for the tiny original sized battery. I remember on the SJ we had to replace the wiring to the solenoid with heavier duty wire via a relay to activate it because of degradation like this. It was well known in the SJ world as the Sticky Starter fix.
I had my starter re build before fitting the Numax with only a small improvement but the Numax was the cure. I've had it rebuilt since due to the abuse it got when I used to go to P&P sites. They don't like going under muddy water you see!
All my earths were cleaned with no benefit too.
I know you just bought a new battery but if cleaning up your earths doesn't solve it, add a jump from someone with a big battery and see if it flies over.

Tend to agree with comments about checking engine earth as the most likely cause of your problem.
