Mine was always a bit stiff moving either way but after an oil change it did make it noticably easier and smoother.

Just for reference, should the 'going backwards' be done in 4WD?

When transmission wind up happens reverse with gentle pressure on the lever till it pops out of 4. Or if your worried about damage just jack one wheel up. Or my preferred method just rock the vehicle from one side to the other till you see a wheel spin loose.

Mines sometimes a bit stiff going in and out of 4wd even though it's used daily. I've never had any problems with wind-up.
Has anyone ever broken anything on their Jimny because of wind-up?

Well I went out yesterday and the transfer lever was again stiff going back into 2wd. Reversed literally 5m applying gentle pressure to the lever and bingo- back in 2wd! Can cope with that if that's all it needs
