M13AA Engine oil was created by 2013gary
Hi,

I don't really know much about oil but what's the best oil for a 2001 DOHC Jimny that does about 20k miles per year?

On the BigJimny guide it says 10w-30 for the M13AA engine, but when choose Suzuki Jimny on most car part websites it either brings up 10w-40 or 5w-30. Also, I'm not sure whether to go for syntheticor part-synthetic.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

10w40 semi. I use Halfords own as it's made by Comma - a good brand and you get 5L for what most others charge for 4L.

Sometimes Halfords have an offer on for 2 containers of 4L where you get the 2nd really cheap, so I do that instead on those occasions.

Annoyingly Halfords seem not to do an oil filter so you can't pick that up at the same time but hey ho, can't have it all ways! You can get your oil filter from the BigJimny shop instead!

Thanks for the advice Kirkynut. I didn't know Halfords was Comma oil. I'll see if I can get a good deal.

No probs mate. I read it on the label years ago - it doesn't have it on there now though!

Then I read an article in Car Mechanics magazine and they also stated that Halfords Oil is made by Comma, confirming it to me!

So it's a no brainer to use it when you effectively get a litre free anyway and when it's on offer it's even better!

I put Mobil 1 0W40 in pretty much everything. Has always been brilliant; 80,000 mile engines ran like new after a lifetime of the stuff and the fuel economy penalty over 0W30 or 10W30 is negligible. Last tank in the Jimny was the magic 40mpg. I don't trust 0W20 to protect the bearings properly under load; Suzuki use it to scrape another 1 mpg or so in the fuel economy test but it's too thin IMO. 0W40 is absolutely fine according to the handbook (it is as good as 10W40, just flows a bit easier when cold).

0W/20 and 5W/20 has been in use in the US for years based on the CAF regulations to reduce fuel consumption and stop the car makers getting charged for fuel hungry cars.

Lots of new cars in the UK including the small Suzuki's are now using these oil weights

If you look at Used Oil Analysis of similar cars using different oil weights on www.bobistheoilguy.com site you will find no evidence at all of more metal wear on engines specced for these oils compared to the same engines using 5W/30 or 10W/40 brews.

Note I say specced for these oils.

If there is no more wear metals in the oil samples what reason have you for saying it is "too thin".

Delighted to examine any data you have to show increased engine failures rather than "we have never used that in the past"

There will be xW/16 on the market next year.
