Got it up on stands and had a look see. The front end of the shaft appears to go into a cup which is the part making the sound.
Is this part mendable or do I need a new shaft?

I understand that this post is quite old, but I think i may have the same issue. It's not a constant noise, but appears when accelerating hard or when i let out the clutch whilst slowing down (Engine braking).
this is gold.
this might just be the solution to the problem i'm having with clunking and grinding noise. had the prop alighned and the ujoint replaced, but didn't cure it. maybe it's those bearing that are shot
