Tried this on 'Chat' but got only one reply1 I have owned my 2005 VVT (completely unmodified) for almost a year. It has 27,000 miles on the clock and had one elderly lady owner. It is in immaculate condition and has been well-maintained. When reversing, with some steering-lock on, there is a gentle 'clunk' coming from the nearside / front area. It almost sounds like the noise that the vacuum hubs make when they are engaging (the 4WD is working perfectly, by the way). It has been like this since I bought it and it does not bother me too much, but I just wanted to know if it could be something that would need to be remedied in case it causes a bigger problem later on. The Kingpins and Bearings have recently been renewed and are 100%. Any ideas????
Regards,
JAGM.

PS Doesn't happen when reversing in a straight line!!

is it a single clunk or a clunk clunk clunk

if its a single clunk have a look at the universal joints on the props to see if there is any play
also check the trackrod ends (theres four of them) for play

if its a clunk clunk clunk it could be a cv joint

Could also be heavily worn radius arm bushes, or elongated holes in the rear axle bracket where the radius arms bolt onto.

think so

that's where my money is,
if the tracking is out this makes it worse,
dips, when rolls off the tyre wall sipes and stresses the joints
so when reversing, clunks and groans like mine did before getting the tracking sorted,
even though I know that one of my ends is on its way out (split rubber), it no longer clunks since it was tracked

GauradianAngel has some good points, but for a 27k mile car it must have had some life

Check and see if the tyre is rubbing against anything if on full lock
