are there any negative points regarding blocking it off?can it cause harm to the engine etc?

you need to get emissions checked. the egr in a petrol motor is to recirculate unburnt exhaust gases. it may not pass the next mot because of the emissions

standard jimny - for now

I just cut the thread down so if I wanted to get it out I had something to grab hold of
has I said it runs better I always blank off on a diesel my pickup has been blanked off for 5 years and its ok
and runs cleaner an engine runs better on cool air so why put hot exhaust gas back in it and it 1 less thing to go wrong
I have been in the motor trade of over 34 years so know what the score is
all I say is try it if you don't like it you can take it back out only took me 1/2 hr
just been out in mine it runs a lot better and may pull better but that could be me thinking it is

+ the Vauxhall astra had egr faults that Vauxhall could not fix so they took them off fitted a blanking plate and took it out of the ecu

The EGR adds gasses to the cylinder to 'fill' it when the engine is under a low load, it doesn't matter if its hot, you just need less. Because EGR is taken after the throttle you still get the same volume of fuel and air but the compression ratio is higher so you get a more efficient engine, pumping losses are also reduced. Diesels are quite different because they don't have a throttle and run at very lean mixtures.
Which Astra? they won't pass the current emissions standards without one.
I work on the design of new ECU electronics for a major OEM supplier so I also have some idea of how they work.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

it was the astra with the 8v engine around 1999 it was the fact that the engine did not run right not that it would not pass emissions
that's why Vauxhall took them off

This issue is always a bone of contention and always polarises peeps into two camps. On the one hand those who say it is there for a purpose and on the other those who think it's a waste of time. My Pajeo is a diesel so it is a tiny bit different but if the EGR went wrong and I was getting plumes of black smoke I'd almost certainly try blanking it off first. In fact I have the pukka plate ready for that eventuality. Meanwhile I've cleaned it a time or two and left it to work as it should.
