I run both. The wider alloys rims just about weigh the same as the narrower steels. Much of the weight is in the tyre so you got to get what you feel like you want. If I were rock climbing I'd stick with steel if only that I can buy a single replacement for peanuts. Steel needs less care and maintenance to a certain extent. On road only and it makes little difference steel or alloy apart from looks but if you want to go wider then go alloy for road use. Main thing is to get as big a tyre height as you can.

The other thing about steelies is that they shrug off scrapes with only paint damage, whereas alloy is deeply gouged.
