Don't do it - HIDs are basically a point source of light and need projector lenses to work properly, legal issues aside. I can recommend Osram Silverstar halogen bulbs if you just want a bit more light - they are excellent quality and seem to last as long as any other halogen lamp. The Halfords +50% halogen lamps (made by GE) I tried were rubbish and the filament was in the wrong place, giving a weird beam pattern.

On wet roads I find that any bluish light (I cycle to work, and LED headlamps of the same sort of colour are normal) gets swallowed up by the night, so I'm dubious about the benefit of HIDs anyway.

The poster with the X5 above would have had projector lenses to begin with, so HIDs would work OK.

I am running with hid head lights and find them properly 1 of the best mods I have done they look cool let out good light and cope well with water all I can say is if you buy cheap Chinese ones then they probably won't be as good as I am a big believer in you get what you pay for

Thanks all for the info. i reckon just changing bulbs is not enough, better lights are needed for night, no moon off roading. the original headlights dont work and a bit more light wont work either. I read there are technical issues to consider about the electric system when changing to HIDs. What about the hid conversion kits inluding projector lenses? Considering costs quality halogen globes are the obviuos choice so i'll try them first while i find out more on this.

I retro fitted projector headlamps to the x5 to over come this problem unless you had a factory xenon up grade on a pre 2003 it did not come with a projector.

However hid 4 u offer a bulb for non projected head lights and in 55W. I have not experienced xenon without a projector though.

Also yes retro fitting a projector with a good hid 4 u kit IMO is the way forward and may do this myself. Let me know if you find a good projector kit !
